Water is life, and clean water means health- (Audrey Hepburn).
Water is essential to life because all life forms are dependent on it. Water is the medium of life. All plants and animals need water to survive. There can be no life on earth without water. Because 60% of our body weight is made up of water. Our bodies use water in all the cells, organs, and tissues, to help regulate body temperature and maintain other bodily functions.
We all need water to survive.
Everyone has the right to sufficient, continuous, safe, acceptable, physically accessible, and affordable water for personal and domestic use. In 2010, the UN General Assembly recognized the human right to water and sanitation.
Our bodies use water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate temperature and maintain other bodily functions. Also, when we breath and sweat and as our foods digest, our bodies loss water. So, it’s important to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water.
People who do not have access to good/ safe water are at risk of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentry, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio. Contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal illnesses, nervous system or reproductive effects, and chronic diseases such as cancer.
Globally, at least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with faeces. Contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause 485 000 diarrhoeal deaths each year.
Whether water is used for drinking, domestic use, food production or recreational purposes, safe and readily available water is important for public health.
We have provided safely managed drinking water services from improved water sources located in premises, available when needed, and free from faecal and priority chemical contamination. This promotes the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6.1(universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water)
Through our safe water intervention, we are reaching people living in low-income and informal settlements who have less access to improved sources of drinking water.
People resident in these places can now use safe water FREE of charge.
Better water sources mean:
✓People now spend less time and effort physically collecting it. Thus, greater personal safety is assured as the need to make long or risky journeys to collect water is ruled out.
✓Less expenditure on healthcare, as people are less likely to fall ill and incur medical costs, and are better able to remain economically productive.
✓Children would have better school attendance as the risk of getting ill from contaminated water is reduced.
